About

Kayra is an organization for men and women in the Madison and Dane County Area
of Wisconsin, who have lost their spouse through death. Several widows, who
felt the need to reach out to others in a similar situation, formed the Kayra
organization in the mid-1960s, and it has continued to this day.

Through the years, Kayra has lessened its attention to grief support services
because of their increased availability through Hospice and other Grief Support
groups, but has continued to provide a mix of social and support services to
those in the process of rebuilding their lives after the death of a spouse.

Kayra has four elected officers and a Board of Directors. It publishes a bi-
monthly newsletter and is starting a social networking site for its members.
Kayra offers a get-acquainted opportunity for widows and widowers to learn more
about the organization and also offers contact people for those with a need to
talk with someone.

As one might expect from a group of widowed men and women, most of our
activities involve a meal. There are several general potlucks each year, along
with an Irish Party in March, a summer Picnic, and a Holiday Party in December.

We gather for Cribbage, Euchre, Morning Coffee & Conversation, and other dining
opportunities. Dining out on Friday nights has been an activity since the
beginning, and there are also dining opportunities within age groups, such as
the 30’s, 40’s, and early 50’s Group or the 50’s-60’s Group, which doesn’t have
an upper age limit.

Membership in the Kayra organization is limited to individuals who have lost a
spouse through death. If this is your situation and you would like additional
information about Kayra, please click Contact Us.

Membership dues are $15.00 per year. The membership year is from September 1
through August 31, and new members may pro-rate their membership amount if they
join during the membership year.

Thank you for your interest in the Kayra Organization.

Agrace Hospice Care

When we experience the death of someone close to us, it is natural and normal to grieve our loss. Grief lasts longer than most people expect, and we may need support beyond what family or friends can provide. Agrace HospiceCare offers grief services to anyone in the community experiencing loss due to death, even if your loved one was not a Agrace HospiceCare patient.

Grief Support Services

The following support services are available to assist people who have lost friends and family members with their grieving processes.
United Way 2-1-1, formerly First Call for Help, is a community resource line, providing 24-hour, 365-day a year, free and confidential information and referral services for people in Dane County who are in need of help. Call 2-1-1 within Dane County or 608-246-4357 from outside Dane County and from cellular phones.
Additional resources may be available in your own community. Grief counseling may be offered by social workers, clergy, nurses, pastoral counselors or trained volunteers. Contact your local hospice, hospital, clinic or religious organization for more information.
